The finest varieties of Golden Monkey (Jin Hou) arrive in the marketplace early in April. The smaller sized, thin, elegant golden-brown leaves are classic characteristics of highest grade, early-pick lots. Golden Monkey is in the Panyang Congou family, a variety of black teas developed during the height of the early tea trading days. These blacks are also described as a "fruity Congous". The varietal is downy which contributes to the bright coloration around the rim of the cup after brewing. The lot we are offering was harvested in the first week of April 2016. It is very aromatic and will cup to a light-red coloration.
Why we selected this particular lot:
We noted the rich golden coloration of the leaves, always eye-catching as the first black teas come out. The consistent size, length and shape of the leaves indicates careful handling and processing. The aroma is fruity, with some hints of malt. With cupping, the tea proved itself offering a sweet, fruity mouth feel with a clean and lingering finish. Once tasted, we noted the lingering sweetness of the tea and how good it makes one feel!
Interesting facts about our selection:
The lot was harvested "before the rains' or in early April. As a result, the leaves are comparatively small and short in length. The tea was grown in the Fuding area of Fujian Province, at an elevation of about 700 meters. The processing is light in that the flavors are quite natural.
A more golden-brown style lot, it offers a complex and multi-layered, almost fruity aroma. The reward, of course, is in the cup, as the malty flavors of this tea are lively and quick to the palate. Like most well-made Chinese black teas, particularly from Fujian Province, the taste will grow in the finish.
Use approximately a round tablespoon or 3 grams per 8-12 ounces of water temperature up to 205 F. Steep for 2 - 3 minutes. The leaves will yield 2-3 steeps.
